So you want to move to Southwest Florida? Here are 10 things you need to know that I wish someone had told me! First – This IS Paradise. Period. Second – Hurricane Season…Be prepared but don’t freak out and hog all the resources. It’s still paradise even with the occasional hurricane scare. Third – Most people are NOT from here. That’s actually a big advantage as you can find people from your area of the country or world pretty easily – especially if it relates to a sports team. Fourth – Blend in. Especially in traffic. Don’t drive like a tourist after you lie here, please. Fifth – Shut up! Southerners don’t care how you did it back home, ‘up there’. Sixth – Embrace Southern Culture. Biggest tip here is SLOW DOWN. Sip a sweet tea, swing under an old mossy tree, go to the beach. Just chill out. That’s how we do it here. Seventh – We have bugs. Big bugs. Weird Bugs. It’s sub-tropical and it’s a fact of life in Florida. You’ll find millipedes. We have no see um’s and they’ll keep you from going to the beach – they are most active in summer and fall, and it’s a real drag but typically doesn’t last too long. Lizards – they’re actually your friends because they eat the bugs. Eighth – Respect the water and the animals in it. It is a powerful force of nature. Obey boating laws. Know that we don’t have lifeguards at beaches so read and obey the posted warnings. They’re rare but if it’s up, it really means something. Make sure your little ones can swim. This is a serious topic and not to be taken lightly in in Florida where swimming is year-round. Ninth – get ready for visitors! Everyone and their brother will want to come see you because you live in paradise now. Tenth – Wear sunscreen. It is no joke. The sun is hotter and more intense here and I don’t mean the temperature. Get your car windows UV Tinted too. That’s my top 10 for you ‘soon to be’ new Floridians! Now you are better prepared than I was when I moved here. You’re welcome.
