Mount St. Helens is a stratovolcano in Washington state known for its 1980 eruption, which was the most destructive volcanic event in U.S. history. It lies 52 miles northeast of Portland, Oregon, and 98 miles south of Seattle. Mount St. Helens takes its English name from that of the British diplomat Alleyne FitzHerbert, 1st Baron oof St Helens, a friend of explorer George Vancouver who surveyed the area in the late 18th century. The Birth of a Lake Interpretive Trail at Coldwater Lake, accessible via Highway 504, offers a boardwalk loop trail with interpretive signs explaining how the 1980 eruption created the lake. The trail is located at approximately 2,500 feet elevation and is about 0.6 miles long. It's known for its educational value, showcasing the landscape changes and ecological recovery following the eruption. My August 12, 2025 visit.
