HOW TO MAKE THIS EASY BATCH OF DISH CLEANING LIQUID (soap nuts are packaged plastic-free and available at most health & natural shops or online) INGREDIENTS: 10 Soap Nuts 1 Liter of Water Large Pot 1 Repurposed Squeezey Dish Soap bottle RECIPE: 1. Add 10 soap nuts to 1 Liter of water 2. Bring to a boil for 15-20 minutes 3. Carefully press the soap nut shell to get any remaining juice out 4. Let cool 5. Using a nut milk bag, strain the liquid into your repurposed squeezey bottle 6. Compost the soap nut shells, add to your soap nut laundry bag, or store in a larger jar in the fridge to create a concentrated batch over time. (will ferment out of the fridge) What is a Soap Nut? Or is it Soap Berry? Soap Berries, Soap Nuts. Tomato, Tomahto! Soap Nuts or Soap Berries are a berry shell that naturally contains a cleaning agent that works like detergent. They grow on the Sapindus mukorossi tree in the Himalayas. Members of the Sapindus genus are commonly known as Soap Berries or Soap Nuts because the fruit pulp is used to make soap. The generic name is derived from the Latin words sapo, meaning "soap", and indicus, meaning "of India." The shells contain saponins, which have surfactant properties, that break the surface tension of the water to penetrate the fibres of your clothing, lifting stains from the fabric, and leaving dirt suspended in the water that is rinsed away. Common store-bought detergents contain chemical surfactants too, this is just a natural source. Despite the “soap” in its name, soap nuts DO NOT contain soap that causes soap scum and buildup like a regular bar of soap does. The part of the tree that is the 'soap nut' are actually berries and they can be harvested from September to February which is an extremely long and sustainable supply. It takes 9 years for the soap nut tree to begin yielding fruit after germination but once it starts producing, it can be harvested for a whopping 90 years, and with 6 months per year of harvest time, well that's a lot of soap nuts. The other outstanding positive that gives this tree a big tick of approval is that the soap nut tree contributes to combating the greenhouse gas effect by converting carbon dioxide into oxygen so by planting and growing these trees not only do we eliminate chemicals from regular laundry detergent but the actual tree itself cleans out air. Not only all of that but the shell of the soap nut is 100% biodegradable, meaning you can literally just chuck them in your compost when your done, helping to cut down on landfill with every load. Soap nuts only activate saponins when in hot water. Making tea from the shells is great for making producst at home. When doing laundry, instead of popping the shells in the little laundry bag, it's best to make a liquid detergent first with boiling water and then add to the wash to avoid using heaps of power to heat the laundry water. Soap nuts are better for your skin. They're all natural and non-toxic, which makes them especially good for sensitive skin and those prone to allergies.
