Minnesota’s Department of Employment and Economic Development says there are currently 40 data centers in Minnesota certified to receive the state’s data center sales tax exemption. More could be on the way. Senator Bill Lieske, R‑Lonsdale, says data centers play an essential role in technological progress and belong in Minnesota, but they need to be regulated, especially around zoning. He argues that enterprise data centers, because of their size, should be in industrial parks, rather than residential neighborhoods. Senator Lieske also shares with Senate Spotlight’s Veronica Marshall why he supports banning the use of non-disclosure agreements (NDAs) for legislators when it comes to data center development.
