Russian Christmas Music was written by Alfred Reed in 1944 and is one of the most frequently performed pieces of concert band literature. A 23 year-old Reed was commissioned to write a piece of "Russian music" for a concert including premieres of new Soviet and American works, intended to improve Soviet-American relations in the closing days of World War II. Reed originally wished to do Prokofiev's March, Op. 99 was as the Russian work, but it was discovered that the work had already been performed in the United States. With only 16 days remaining before the concert, Reed was assigned to write a new piece, which was first performed on December 12, 1944, on nationally broadcast NBC radio. Russian Christmas Music is an exploration of the style of Eastern Orthodox liturgical music, which uses the human voice exclusively, transformed into the symphonic band medium; it is divided into four sections: Carol of the Little Russian Children The Antiphonal Chant The Village Song The Cathedral Chorus This is Russian Christmas Music reimagined as an orchestral work.
