A majority of the Japanese public appeared to be hoping that Prime Minister Shinzo Abe will include Japan's apology for past wartime atrocities in his forthcoming landmark statement this summer. In a telephone survey conducted on Saturday and Sunday by Japan's Kyodo News, 54.5 percent of the Japanese respondents said Abe should include key words such as "remorse" and "apology" over Tokyo's World War Two atrocities in his statement set to be issued in August to mark the 70th anniversary of Japan's surrender in the war. Meanwhile, the Abe administration has been actively sponsoring a series of advertisements on the U.S. news channel CNN, that many pundits see as the former colonial ruler's bid for "image laundry" ahead of the anniversary. All the ads feature Japanese volunteers' activities contributing to the betterment of the people living in underdeveloped countries around the world. They end with image of Abe.
