🦊 In this GCSE Physics video, we explain that alpha particles, consisting of two protons and two neutrons, are emitted by large, unstable nuclei to reduce their size and become more stable. Due to their strong positive charge, alpha particles are highly ionizing and can pull electrons from nearby atoms, but they have a short range, traveling only about 5 cm in air, and can be stopped by a sheet of paper. Although they ionize a lot over a short distance, their effects are limited by their inability to travel far. 👋 Hi, we’re Launchpad Learning.
