(13 Aug 1996) English/Nat In Britain, a woman carrying eight fetuses is causing a stir. Mandy Allwood and her boyfriend have rejected aborting any of the fetuses in a bid to become parents of living octuplets. The 31-year-old has signed a controversial contract with Britain's "News of the World" for a reported half a (m) million U-S dollars. The mother of a famous set of quintuplets in the U-S is shocked and dismayed by Allwood's decision. In 1970, the birth of the Kienast quintuplets took the U-S by storm. On February 24th of that year, P.J Kienast and her husband Bill became parents of what are believed to be the second set of living quintuplets born in America. Amy, Sara, Gordon, Abby and Ted were born - in that order - at a New York Hospital. They immediately became the focus of the media spotlight, appearing on magazine covers and in commercials. Even though she successfully had five children, P.J Kienast is still shocked at Mandy Allwood's decision to try to have eight children. Kienast is also dismayed by the deal Allwood has struck with Britain's biggest tabloid, "News of the World." SOUNDBITE: (English) "The whole idea of it, is, it just ...boggles the mind. And what she's doing with it, it's really tackiness to the nth degree, I think. Children aren't, as I read somewhere in one of the articles, aren't to be used as commodities." SUPER CAPTION: P.J Kienast, mother of quintuplets The Kienast children, in addition to magazine covers, were also in a few commercials. Kienast says the whole family enjoyed the attention and it was a help financially. But she said parents must be careful not to overexpose their children. SOUNDBITE: "As far as the financial end goes, you certainly take advantage of what you can without prostituting yourself and your family. I would recommend putting something aside if you can." SUPER CAPTION: P.J Kienast, mother of quintuplets In addition to the quintuplets, there are also two older children, Meg and John. It has not been easy raising seven children. The family has suffered through a financial crisis and a tragedy. In 1984, the quintuplets' father Bill, struggling with his business and the responsibility of such a large family, committed suicide. Despite the tragedy, P.J Kienast, who works restoring houses, says her family is happy and she wouldn't trade having had quintuplets for anything. Last year, the whole family got together for oldest daughter Meg's wedding. Now the quins are 26 years old. Sara works in television. Ted is a student and engaged to be married. Abby is in school and so is Gordon. Amy has finished getting her degree and is living at home with her mother temporarily. Kienast had this advice for any parents expecting a multiple birth. SOUNDBITE: "Just appreciate them. Every minute of it, because they grow so fast and suddenly they're 26 and they are not little babies anymore." SUPER CAPTION: P.J Kienast, mother of quintuplets Other than daughter Amy, it's just P.J Kienast and her two dogs sharing a home now.
