A completely different routine is difficult to adjust to especially if you have been living alone for many years and are set in your ways. Having to adjust to a dementia unit routine is multi factorial as Pieta Valentine explains in this video. This ‘Positive practical techniques for dementia’ video series by P. Valentine is to assist relatives who have a loved one with dementia who is either about to enter a dementia unit or who is already in one. For those of you who don’t know me, I am Pieta Valentine a former physiotherapist of 35 years who then worked for 8 years in a D3 dementia unit as a qualified diversional therapist. All the positive, practical techniques in these videos are derived from my observational skills, experience, reading and professional expertise as both a diversional therapist working in a D3 dementia unit and as a physiotherapist living and working in New Zealand, England, Canada and Australia. I worked with geriatrics for many of my physio therapy years, having a private practice in Sydney for 5 years then another private practice for 25 years in Christchurch NZ treating work place injuries for stress and neck and arm pain in response to the thousands struck with OOS( occupational overuse syndrome) RSI( repetitive strain injury) from the stress of computers introduced to government departments in the early 1990s. Physiotherapists don’t medicate. They are problem solvers. Enabling patients to self manage through practical techniques, effort and hard work. This ethos along with my stress management work I have applied to all my work endeavours, not least with the dementia patients in dementia units. BOOKS WRITTEN: I am author of the two new books: ‘The Residents’ Voice From a Dementia Unit’ and ‘The Residents’ Rise From a Dementia Unit’. The Residents’ Voice is to help family members with the move of their relative in to the dementia unit. The Residents’ Rise is to help family members once their relative is established in the dementia unit. Both books can be purchased at Amazon books and Pieta Valentines’ website below. Excerpts of first chapter can be read on both sites. WEBSITE: https://www.pietavalentine.com https://www.amazon.com/Residents-Voic... https://www.amazon.com/Residents-Rise...
