Reel 1: • 1930s GERMAN FILM " WEDDING AT TEGERNSEE ... Dating to the 1930s, this silent film from Germany is entitled "Wedding at Tegernsee", and shows the formal process involved in getting married, including the delivery of the gifts / dowry to a new home, all set in the the idyllic -- some would say storybook -- scenery of Bavaria. The town of Tegernsee is a resort to this day, most well known for its surroundings which include the slopes of the Bavarian Alps, laced with ski trails, toboggan runs and footpaths. (Note: In Nazi Germany, marriage was heavily influenced by Nazi ideology, with the state encouraging "Aryan" marriages through incentives like marriage loans and punishing intermarriage, particularly between Jews and non-Jews, through laws like the Nuremberg Laws.) 00:00 00:18 First title card: The Day of the Wedding. A tiara is placed up on the head of the bride and she is dressed in traditional clothes called a dirndl. The wedding dirndl has its origins in the nineteenth century. Now classed as trachten (meaning traditional) clothing, dirndls were three-piece garments worn by peasants in Bavaria and other Alpine regions. Each piece included an apron and a special blouse as well as the dress itself. 00:54 a coachman sits outside the bride's home, and she gets into the coach to ride to the wedding. Her mother wipes away tears. 01:44 The family of the groom joins the bride in the coach. 02:12 The coach arrives at the document room of the town hall, where the official paperwork will be signed. 02:53 A copy of German dictator Adolf Hitler's autobiography "Mein Kampf" (My Struggle) is shown, and part of it read to the bride and groom. It may sound odd, but during the Nazi era in Germany (1933-1945), couples were given "Mein Kampf" by the Nazi state as a wedding present. "Mein Kampf" was seen as a symbol of the regime's ideology and a tool for propaganda. 03:11 Everyone listens with rapt attention to the reading. 03:26 The bridal couple is asked to sign the register. 03:58 The groom signs, followed by the bride. 04:40 The signatures are blotted and other paperwork prepared. 05:03 The finished wedding documents are handed to the couple. (Note: In Nazi Germany, couples seeking to marry, especially those considered "Aryan," were required to obtain an "Aryan certificate" (Ahnenpaß, or "ancestor's passport") which was a book of documents proving their family's racial purity, including birth and marriage certificates of themselves, their parents, and grandparents. This may be that document.) 05:30 the bride and groom leave in the coach with the wedding party and head to a guest house or hotel. A band awaits their arrival, as well as many guests dressed in traditional clothes. 6:40 The band begins to serenade the wedding party. 6:55 The wedding party arrives at the guest house and go inside for the wedding meal. 7:44 The "Morning soup" is served. This might be Flädlesuppe (German pancake soup) sometimes served as a first course. 8:11 "Acknowledgements" as the bride and groom greet guests and a statement is read aloud 9:30 the wedding party and the band assemble outside the guest house and begin to parade down the street. 9:57 The wedding party arrives at the church where a priest performs the religious portion of the wedding service. 10:40 The bride and groom hold hands while the priest places a part of his religious vestment or sash on top of their hands. 11:04 the mass is performed by the priest. (In this period much of the Bavarian population were Christian and mostt belonged to the Roman Catholic Church or the Evangelical Lutheran Church). 12:10 the entire wedding party receives communion as part of the ceremony. 12:30 the wedding feast begins in earnest now that the religious service is concluded. 13:50 The "Honor" -- apparently of sipping the first drink and toasting the new couple. 14:26 The dancing begins. Motion picture films don't last forever; many have already been lost or destroyed. For almost two decades, we've worked to collect, scan and preserve the world as it was captured on 35mm, 16mm and 8mm movies -- including home movies, industrial films, and other non-fiction. If you have endangered films you'd like to have scanned, or wish to donate celluloid to Periscope Film so that we can share them with the world, we'd love to hear from you.
