Join this time lapse journey on the motorway ”Sydmotorvejen” through Denmark over the islands of Lolland, Falster, Sjælland and further across the Öresund on the Öresund Bridge to Malmö and Sweden - 182 km in 4 minutes. In the Third Reich, the expansion of the Reichsautobahn RAB 1 from Hamburg to Lübeck was pushed ahead. In the Autobahn plans of 1933, no Autobahns north of Lübeck were originally planned. However, the existence of the bridges Guldborgsundbroen and Storstrømsbroen in Denmark aroused great interest in the Third Reich, and so after the German occupation of Denmark in 1940 during World War II, construction began of the first Autobahn in Denmark, from Rødby via Maribo and Sakskøbing to the Guldborgsund Bridge. A bridge connection over the Fehmarnsund (Vogelfluglinie) and an extension of the Reichsautobahn to Copenhagen were planned. However, the work was stopped in 1943. Part of this Autobahn section is now in operation as the motorway E 47, Sydmotorvejen. Construction did not resume until well after the Second World War and this part was then opened to traffic in 1963. On the island of Lolland there are still numerous road bridges from that time that cross the motorway Sydmotorvejen. The Sekundærrute 153 was originally part of the planned Reichsautobahn to Copenhagen and later part of E47 between Copenhagen and Rødbyhavn. After the construction of Sydmotorvejen, the E47 came to run over the new motorway. The old E47 was downgraded between Copenhagen and Vordingborg to Sekundærrute 151 and between Vordingborg and Rødbyhavn to Sekundærrute 153. Its straight line through the landscape, particularly obvious between Sakskøbing and Guldborg, is a legacy of the German motorway planning.
