Sharon Marie Tate was born in Dallas in 1943, a butter-blonde beauty from the very beginning. Her light followed her across the shifting landscape of military bases that marked her upbringing. With a colonel father and a life lived out of suitcases, she learned resilience early. Gentle, observant, and grounded by a deep bond with her family, especially her younger sisters. Despite mysterious childhood illnesses and bouts of loneliness, Sharon carried herself with quiet strength and kindness. Her first real brush with fame came in Italy in 1960, when she graced the cover of Stars and Stripes and appeared in a Pat Boone special. Encouraged by actor Richard Beymer, she made the leap to Hollywood. There, under the careful eye of producer Marty Ransohoff, she signed with Filmways. Rather than rushing her into stardom, Ransohoff had her train, model, and appear in small roles like Janet Trego on The Beverly Hillbillies. Behind the scenes, she was thoughtful and funny-elegant but slightly clumsy, and all the more lovable for it. During this time, Sharon met Jay Sebring, a talented hairstylist and Korean War veteran who quickly became her partner and champion. Though their romance eventually ended, Jay remained deeply devoted to her, always nearby, always protective. Her big break came with Eye of the Devil, followed by The Fearless Vampire Killers, directed by Roman Polanski. Despite initial hesitation, Roman cast her and soon fell for her completely. Their romance moved quickly: Sharon ended her engagement to Jay, and Roman was smitten, calling her the "sweetest, most innocent" woman he had ever met. Sharon was equally devoted, longing not just for love, but for a sense of home. While she dabbled briefly in psychedelics, she remained traditional at heart, she dreamed of marriage, family, and a quiet kind of happiness. Roles in Don’t Make Waves showed her comedic charm, some say she inspired the Malibu Barbie. But Sharon wanted more than pretty-girl parts. In Valley of the Dolls, she played Jennifer North, a tragic character often compared to Marilyn Monroe. Despite a chaotic shoot, Sharon was committed, and the film’s cult success cemented her as a rising star with real emotional depth. In January 1968, Sharon and Roman married in London. They became a golden couple of the Swinging Sixties, moving into a charming Los Angeles home she called the “love house.” Though Roman’s infidelities were whispered about, those close to Sharon believed their love was real. When she became pregnant later that year, she glowed with anticipation. She left Filmways to choose roles on her own terms, and filmed The Thirteen Chairs in Italy while managing morning sickness and exhaustion. Still, photos of her during this time show pure joy: radiant, excited for motherhood. She returned to Los Angeles in July 1969, awaiting Roman’s arrival. On the night of August 8, she stayed home with friends Abigail Folger, Wojciech Frykowski, and Jay Sebring. That night, four members of the Manson Family: Tex Watson, Susan Atkins, Patricia Krenwinkel, and Linda Kasabian, broke into the house. They didn’t know Sharon. They didn’t care. Acting on Charles Manson’s apocalyptic delusions, they murdered Sharon, her unborn son, and her friends in an act of unimaginable violence. But that is not where her story ends. Sharon Tate was more than a victim. She was light, laughter, grace, and depth. To know her was to love her and through the memories, films, and photographs she left behind, her spirit still lingers.
