Along the way, I use Neon Genesis Evangelion as a case study — a series that looks like a mecha anime on the surface, but is really about fragile, wounded people searching for meaning, identity, and connection. We live in a culture that often calls itself materialistic, claiming that only what can be measured is real. And yet the stories we pay for and cry over refuse to act that way. They insist that the invisible is real — that a human being is more than a biological machine. You can call that depth consciousness, inner life, or personhood. Or you can call it what people have called it for thousands of years: a soul.
