I see many boom operators speak down to sound utilities, even those more experienced than themselves. The sound utility job is difficult enough even before the boom operator calls in carpets to silence footfalls, fix a lav on set or second boom. One of the busiest jobs on a film set and yet, very underpaid. Even worse... some shows don't even budget for a sound utility! It was a lot easier when the utility was just known as the "cableman" but the job requirements have exploded and the sound department "third" is far from being just an entry level position. In this video I'll go over what boom operators should know when working with a sound utility. More than just showing respect for a difficult job but one with someone that helps you perform your job.
