I originally posted this as an easter egg at the end of my MONTAGE vs MONTAGE M audio quality comparison • Audio quality comparison - Yamaha MONTAGE ... , but the PSS-680 is well loved in its own right, I thought I'd post it as its own video.... The 1988 Yamaha PSS-680 was a special instrument. Disguised as a toy, with mini keys, this keyboard was a full-fledged FM synthesizer, with a two operator FM engine derived from the DX7. While the built-in keyboard could not transmit velocity information, the engine was able to respond, and using an external keyboard via the MIDI connections present on the PSS-680, it was possible to get expressive, nuanced performances. Boasting 100 preset FM sounds, 100 auto-accompaniment styles that could be played with a single finger, or with chord articulation, it also had PCM sample-based percussion and drum pads to assist in recording patterns. Its stereo sound could be output via the built-in speakers, a headphone port, or better yet, professional left / right 1/4" TS ports. But for many people, the most memorable thing about the PSS-680 was its fantastic demo song, which I present here in its entirety.
