In the globalised 21st century, our world seems abundant with problems, including the environmental and ethical concerns surrounding animal agriculture and the use of animal products. One exceptionally promising solution to this is changing the landscape of protein production, by sourcing proteins without the use of livestock, in order to create a 🌿more sustainable food and agriculture system🌿, 🐾lessen widespread suffering to non-human animals🐾, and 💉decrease the risk of chronic diseases and zoonotic pandemics💉. To help you explore these ideas and possible career pathways, the UniMelb Alternative Protein Initiative and Effective Altruism UniMelb present to you: ✨Careers in the World of Alternative Proteins✨, a two-part panel-based event featuring 🔬research🔬 and 💼industry💼 professionals pioneering the nascent field of Alternative Proteins. Speakers Introductions Simon Newstead most recently co-founded Betterbite Ventures, an early-stage investment company that has supported an impressive list of alternative protein start-ups. Better Bite Ventures focuses on funding start-ups that work on both plant-based and cell-based meat alternatives. Dr Jenn Lacy-Nichols is an academic specialist in non-communicable diseases (NCDs) at the University of Melbourne. She was previously involved in the Future Food Hallmark Research Initiative. She is actively involved in Alt protein research. In particular, she has explored the political practices and commercialisation of food systems including alternative proteins. Klara Kalocsay is the research and content manager at Food Frontier, an independent think tank and advisor on alternative proteins. Her work has focused on synthesising literature surrounding alternative proteins and researching the nutrition of commercially available plant-based products in Australia.
