Welcome back, Apex's Fam! On today's video I took a short tour around Shkup's center, it was a great city and I liked the architecture and the figure of Alexander the Great but I was disappointed that it had slavic writing over it, he was Illyrian. I will be posting my drone videos on this channel, so stay tuned for more! Let me tell you something about Shkup(Skopje): Shkupi (modern-day Skopje) was part of Dardania, an ancient Illyrian region, before it became incorporated into the Kingdom of Macedonia. Dardania covered areas of modern-day North Macedonia, Kosovo, and parts of Albania. The people of this region were primarily Illyrians, and their language was Illyrian, which was spoken across much of the Balkans and parts of Central Europe. Alexander the Great, often associated with Ancient Macedonia, did not speak Greek as we understand it today. Instead, he and his people, like the Illyrians, spoke a shared Illyrian language. The historical and cultural ties between the Illyrians and Macedonians were deep, and both peoples were part of the same broader Indo-European group. Alexander’s mother, Olympias, was from Epirus, which was closely tied to the Illyrians, further connecting the Macedonian royal family to Illyrian roots. The Albanian people today trace their heritage back to the Illyrians, and this shared ancestry connects them to both Skanderbeg (Gjergj Kastrioti) and Alexander the Great. Both are seen as heroes of the same bloodline, stemming from the same Illyrian cultural and ethnic roots. However, over time, Macedonia became slavicized, particularly due to the migration and settlement of Slavic peoples from Bulgaria. Modern people who now identify as Macedonians have, in many cases, assimilated into Slavic culture and language. Many of them claim the historical legacy of Alexander the Great and other figures from the region, involve a misappropriation of the ancient Illyrian culture and history that belongs to the original people of the Balkans, including Albanians. The true cultural and ethnic inheritance of figures like Alexander the Great and Skanderbeg lies with the Illyrians, who are the ancestors of modern Albanians. The attempts by some modern Slavic groups to claim this heritage are viewed by many as attempts to erase or distort the region's Illyrian history and legacy. Thus, while Alexander the Great and Skanderbeg are often portrayed in different contexts today, they are connected by a shared Illyrian ancestry — the same bloodline, and the same cultural and historical roots that belong to the Albanians of the Balkans.
