An operation to implant a newly-launched spinal cord stimulator into a patient suffering chronic pain took place in Kent & Canterbury Hospital's Day Surgery Centre at the end of November 2012. This was just the second time the stimulator had been implanted in Europe. The stimulator is placed alongside the spinal cord to relieve chronic pain by changing the sensation that the brain feels. It is used to help people who have experienced chronic limb pain for a number of years and meet the stringent criteria required to take this dramatic step. The procedure is not new to the Pain Team, who have been running the service for two and a half years, but the technology used is a great advance. It allows the Pain Team to achieve much greater coverage of the appropriate area of the spinal cord and therefore give a better result for the patient.
