I got the idea for this video while playing Echoes on the guitar in a Chuck Palahniuk chat room (the cult, http://www.chuckpalahniuk.net) and someone brought up something about Andrew Lloyd Webber. I have, in the past, searched for comparisons of the song, and didn't fid any, so I settled on downloading the Phantom theme and of course, being the Floydian I am, already had Echoes, as it is one of my favorite songs. I was surprised to see no vids on the tube of you regarding the alleged copying of Pink Floyd's Echoes by Andrew Lloyd Webber into Phantom of the Opera , so here's all you'll ever need to know about it. This is Roger Waters. He is the greatest musician of all time. He was the bassist and front man of Pink Floyd during the 1970s before they creatively crashed when Waters left and Gilmour took command. No offense to the man, he's a hell of a guitarist, but he's no master musician. Echoes is a 23+ minute composition written by all four members of the band, first released on their studio album Meddle in 1971. It book ended their live and studio feature film "Pink Floyd: Live at Pompeii". Andrew Lloyd Webber is a dirty old man who writes scores for plays such as 'Cats'. His production in question, Le Phantom de la Opera, was first performed around 1986, give or take. Waters expressed his belief that Webber copied the main riff of Echoes for his successful 'Phantom of the Opera' Theme in an interview with Q Magazine in November 1992. Visualizing how these pieces are played makes one realize how close they really are. Echoes starts on a D flat and descends to A. Phantom starts on D and descends to A sharp. Not caring enough to have listened to any of Webber's work, I cannot say in all honesty and objectivity that his work is straight-up garb. However, I am without prejudice delighted to proclaim that any copying of someone else's music for your own gain or profit is garbage. Unless you have their permission, and/or the music was bad to begin with, and you made it good. Neither is the case here. Waters' quote: "Yeah, the beginning of that bloody Phantom song is from Echoes. I couldn't believe it when I heard it. It's the same time signature - it's 12/8 - and it's the same structure and it's the same notes and it's the same everything. Bastard. It probably is actionable. It really is! But I think that life's too long to bother with suing Andrew fucking Lloyd Webber." (Note: The time signature is not 12/8, but it is the same). I do think the Phantom theme sounds quite good, with great vocals, etc, but it doesn't authorize the rip off. I really don't know any of the guy's other work though, so don't start b'ing about, "Oh, how could you criticize (insert play score here) that he wrote?!? It's great! Other information about the video: You'll see Willie Mays in the background, a Goodfellas cast shot, The Chuck Palahniuk, The Ron Paul, and maybe the Al Pacino if he squeezed in. The guitar I used is a Fender Starcaster (no, it's not a misspell of Stratocaster, it's a starter version of it). I'm using the Fender amp that came with it, and there's normal distortion on with that little lever thing all the way down, the most wah-ie it makes it sound without buying a pedal or something for the effect. The keyboard is a cheap Casio starter thing for kids, sounds terrible but gets the point across. I'm promoting those of my own accord, not because those groups asked me to. And while you're at it, read the US Constitution. The short document is, after all, the supreme law of the land, and effectively tells bad and unconstitutional laws where to stick it when they are passed by those dirty filthy rancid politicians who reside in governing locations all over America.
