Day 24-25 May 19, 2024 - May 20, 2024 The full moon was bright and it was very mild as we slept in the dry riverbed of Mission Creek. We woke up before the sun since the previous day was scorching. The trail was lined with cairns at the start and then it just became a free for all. I could already tell it was going to be a slow moving day. There has been rumor that Mission Creek was the source of the recent noro-virus outbreak. We took extra precautions and both filtered and treated our drinking water with purifying tablets. The water definitely had a questionable small and color to it. I refused to get my feet wet so early in the day. Our first sobo hiker told us that Mission Creek gave Pennsylvania a run for its money with the rocks. He was right. We constantly had to cross over the creek, still trying to keep our feet dry. Honestly, looking back, what a dumb move. "Just walk through it!" I yell at the screen while editing. Once the sun hit us at 7:30am, we were stuck all day long with no shade. Of course, the rattlesnake took up the only shady tree. After 5 miles or so, there was nowhere else to cross with dry feet; we gave up. But the water felt great. We were missing out, I guess. I think we're one of the few hikers that actually attempted this section. Mission Creek: Mission Accomplished. We found our way back to the trail and were welcomed with all of these wonderful, tall trees. Took a long break out of the sun and acquired a new fear, rattlesnakes climbing vertical rock walls. I didn't realize we'd be ending our day with a seriously long climb. We started at 2,000ft and camped at 8,000ft. What a physically exhausting day. I carried 5 liters of water to prepare for tomorrow's 16 mile water carry. There was a picnic table at camp and we ran into Nate from the top of San Jacinto section. Slept in shorts last night but sleeping with all of my layers on tonight. Our day consisted of hiking above 8,000ft all day long. The wind was whipping and temperatures were much cooler. Had a beautiful view of the San Gorgonio Ridge and overlooked Mission Creek with San Jacinto peeking super far away now. After yesterday's slow moving route, we were flying today. Very cruisy. We crossed 250 miles and passed by some animal enclosure with feeding chutes. Lot's of blowdowns appeared and a large quantity of pinecones lined the trail. We felt good and kept pushing which happened to be our biggest day on trail yet. Camped tucked in a gully on nice soft pine needles. Excited to reach Big Bear tomorrow and take a zero.
