The Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam (GERD) is a gravity dam under construction on the Blue Nile in Ethiopia. Construction begun in 2011 at the site located close to the Ethiopian Sudanese border. The reservoir will take between 5 to 15 years to be filled depending on the hydrologic conditions as well as political considerations presented by Egypt that has consistently expressed its concerns over the disruption of water supply downstream The main gravity dam is 155metres high and 1780 metres wide. In addition there will be a curved rock fill saddle dam which will be 5.2 kilometres long and 50 metres high. The hydro-electric dam is designed to produce 6.45 gigawatts of energy once completed through 16 generating units and it will earn the distinction of being the largest hydroelectric power plant in Africa.
