[25:57] Trailer Score Known more for his cult horror films, Italian actor, film director, and screenwriter Lucio Fulci (1927-1996) delivers his first of three Spaghetti westerns, the other two being 'The Four of the Apocalypse (1975) and 'Silver Saddle (1978). Written by Fernando Di Leo (1932-2003), who was to become quite a major figure in Euro-cult cinema, the film stars Gino Barbacane, Tom Felleghy, Giuseppe Addobbati (1909-1986), Linda Sini (1924-1999), Nino Castelnuovo (1936-2021), Rina Franchetti (1907-2010), and genre regulars Franco Nero and George Hilton (1934-2019). The mid-1960's saw a large demand for these Italian-helmed westerns given the major success of Sergio Leone's films in the United States and abroad, as well as Sergio Corbucci's films in the European and Japanese markets. Though the story here is a very typical tale of family revenge, Di Leo and Fulci fill it with a rather unexpected brutality that's sets it above the plethora of other Euro-westerns that followed. The Italian title translates to 'The Colt Sang Death and it was... Massacre Time. Tom Corbett (Franco Nero) is panning for gold when he receives a message insisting on his immediate return home. Upon his arrival, Tom discovers the family farm has been seized by the tyrannical Scott family and his brother Jeff (George Hilton) is now an alcoholic. On the surface, patriarch Jason Scott Snr. (Giuseppe Addobbati) controls the town, but the real power rests with his deranged, whip-wielding son, Jason Junior (Nino Castelnuovo). While Tom searches about town, several people around him are murdered, yet the hired guns never try to kill him. According to his brother, they don't want to. Puzzled, Tom pays a visit to the Scott ranch, but suffers horrific torture at Junior's hands, but again his life is saved. When Mercedes (Rina Franchetti), a beloved Indian woman of the Corbett family is savagely gunned down, Jeff decides to take up arms and side with his brother, who heads straight for the Scott ranch. But Tom soon learns that Scott Snr. was responsible for the message that brought him home. But why? The film's score by underappreciated composer/musician Coriolano 'Lallo' Gori is outstanding, and is on par with some of the best scores from within this genre. With some beautiful themes throughout, Gori's odd, minimalistic style of arranging makes this innovative and almost avant-garde. One of the more colourful characters of the Italian film music scene, Gori had composed around eighty soundtracks for various genres of film, including 'Dead Men Don't Make Shadows (1970), 'Death Falls Lightly (1972), 'Calling All Police Cars (1975), 'Legend of the Wolf Woman (1976), and 'Could It Happen Here? (1977). The infectious theme song, 'Back Home, Someday (A Man Alone) was written by Sergio Bardotti (1939-2007) and performed by Italian actor and singer-songwriter Sergio Endrigo (1933-2005), with lyrics by Fulci himself.
