(23 Sep 1999) Natural Sound Some 15-thousand demonstrators clashed with police outside the Indonesian parliament in Jakarta on Thursday. They were protesting against a new government bill that gives more power to Indonesia's military when a state emergency is declared. The protest, comprised of university students, turned violent after rioters began throwing rocks to the police who were blocking their attempted march toward parliament. In reply, police fired tear gas, blanks and rubber bullets, and charged toward the protestors with batons and sticks. Several arrests were made and although the protest dispersed, many were already badly injured. One person was bundled into a police jeep wrapped in white sheet, and it was not known if he had been killed. The controversial bill, which was passed earlier on Thursday, was drawn up by military leaders and sponsored by army-appointed deputies in the chamber. It allows the military to control the news media, ban demonstrations and brush aside laws guaranteeing human rights in the event of a political crisis. Meanwhile, protests continued outside the Australian embassy by Nationalists opposed to Australia's involvement in East Timor. An effigy of the Australian prime minister, John Howard, was attacked as protestors called for his death. Many Indonesians feel humiliated over their country's handling of East Timor, particularly over the criticisms they have received from the international community. Several student representatives were later allowed inside the embassy to air their grievances. Protests have been taking place outside the embassy on an almost daily basis. Australia had been among the first to call for the intervention of multinational forces in the former Portuguese colony two weeks ago. Elsewhere, riot police had fired on 5-hundred students rallying at Moestopo University in Jakarta after protestors allegedly threw a home-made bomb. They too were protesting the new government legislation. A number of students were treated for injuries inside the university after the protest.
