Malindi is a town on Malindi Bay at the mouth of the Sabaki River, lying on the Indian Ocean coast of Kenya. It is 120 kilometers northeast of Mombasa. It is the largest urban center in Kilifi County. Tourism is the major industry in Malindi. The city is popular among Italian tourists. Malindi is served by a domestic airport and a highway between Mombasa and Lamu. The nearby Watamu resort and Gedi Ruins (also known as Gede) are south of Malindi. The mouth of the Sabaki River lies in northern Malindi. The Watamu and Malindi Marine National Parks form a continuously protected coastal area south of Malindi. The area shows classic examples of Swahili architecture. The majority of Malindi's population is Muslim. The Malindi Kingdom appears to have been formed around the 9th century AD and grown powerful in the two centuries before Vasco de Gama ushered in Portuguese colonization of the region, the latter leading to the decline of the civilization. The city of Malindi, founded around 850 AD, was in a somewhat northerly location than the modern city and appeared to have been destroyed around 1000 AD. There are sparse signs of habitation for the next two centuries, then recovery and prosperity in the 1200s. We go to discover the African culture known as the Swahili civilization. We will also discover how the Arabs and the Portugues began the international trade of slave Africans. Known as the trans-Atlantic slave trade. The immense 490-kilometer coastline that defines Eastern Kenya is lined with palm trees from where it meets Somalia in the north to Tanzania in the south. The Kenyan coastline attracted outsiders in the seventh century because of its wealth, beauty, and trade. A Kenyan coastline is a place of unimaginable beauty. Where gentle trade winds allowed the passage of traditional dhow boats between Arabia and India, traders once saw the area as a favored spot to exchange spices. The resulting heady mix of imported and indigenous influences from Africa, Arabia, and Asia created Swahili culture, producing Kenya’s most spoken language.
