t’s an alarming statistic: 138 million Americans 12 and older drink alcohol, according to the National Center for Drug Abuse Statistics, and 28 million have an alcohol use disorder. Moreover, excessive alcohol use is responsible for about 178,000 deaths in the United States each year, per the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, and it shortens the lives of those who die by an average of 23 years. It’s also associated with an increased risk of injuries, chronic diseases like liver disease and heart disease, several cancers and poor pregnancy outcomes. Like depression and other mental illnesses, addiction is a very real medical disorder. It’s a complex disease with psychological, biological and social components that’s rooted in brain changes.
