After patients undergo a reverse total shoulder replacement we typically divide rehab into 3 distinct stages that coincide with the rates of tissue healing. The first phase is called the immediate post-op, or protection phase. The goals during this phase are to protect the new shoulder while healing tissue is very delicate as well as to gently and gradually improve shoulder motion. This phase typically lasts for 6 weeks after surgery. The next phase is called the intermediate post-op phase or range of motion phase. This phase starts at the 6th post op week and lasts until the 12th post op week with most patients. At this stage, the healing tissue has become strong enough to tolerate shoulder movement to a certain degree and in certain directions. During this time, we work on improving shoulder movement while still protecting the most vulnerable tissues. In addition, we gradually begin to strengthen some of the shoulder muscles. The last phase is the late post-op phase AKA the strengthening phase. As the name implies, our main focus during this time is to improve muscle strength in order to optimize shoulder function. In this video, I demonstrate the home exercise program that I give to my patients that are in the range of motion phase. The point of this program is to compliment what we are working on in the clinic in order to improve shoulder movement and to begin a gradual progression of muscle strengthening.
