What is the English Flag? | History of St George's Cross

The English Flag, also called St George's Cross, has been in use at least since the Middle Ages, before making its way onto the Union Flag together with St Andrew's Saltire of Scotland and then St Patrick's Saltire of Ireland. While ultimately less well know than the "Union Flag", more commonly referred to as simple the British Flag, St George's red cross on a white field is the national flag of England and the English. But for much of the Middle Ages, it wasn't the only one used by the kingdom of England, and St George had to contend with the like of St Edmund and St Edward for prime position as "the" flag of England.
