Who was the audience? There are Meccan surahs and Medina Surahs, Surah An'aam is a late Meccan surah. It was revealed in the final year that the prophet was in Mecca (13th year). The Muslim community was small and vulnerable at the time. The prophet has been inviting and propagating the message of Islam for over 12 years but has been met with antagonism and abuse. This was a very trying time in the life of the Prophet. He had just lost his two most important supporters, Abu Talib and Khadija. Most of his followers had already migrated to Habasha. The Prophet had almost no supporters anymore. Many Muslims didn't even know if Islam will survive at this point. Many Muslims have experienced trauma. They've lost their home, family members, their lives. Prophet is still a human being who experiences emotional and mental fatigue. One of the reasons for it being revealed all at once is because it gives the prophet a lot of consolation Time Periods while in Mecca Prophet spent 13 years in Mecca. That period can be broken into four stages Stage 1: First three years • First stage of the Meccan period. Characterized by secrecy • The prophet was inviting select individuals to Islam in secret • Meccan people had no idea Islam existed, so there was no antagonism or abuse taking place Stage 2: Years 3-5 • The holy prophet is given the divine command to take Islam public • The harassment and abuse began during this time. Initially people would mock the prophet and calling him names • As the aristocrats and powerful people of mecca realized that Muhammad and his followers are trying to change the status quo, the verbal gradually escalated to physical abuse • Mushrikeen started to target the poor and vulnerable Muslims Stage 3: Years 5-10 • Persecution became so severe that many Muslims could not stay in Mecca, they were getting physical assaulted on a daily basis • Prophet sent most of his followers on a migration • Those who stayed behind had a boycott imposed on them • Prophet was suffering tremendously when he saw others being tortured. He felt pain when he saw his followers suffering • 10th year: Abu Talib and Khadija pass away because they were forced to stay out in a mountain hangout. Prophet: "There were nights when me and Bilal would go out to gather food and the only food we could get were the herbs we found in the Ground" Stage 4: Years 10-13 • Life became truly unbearable in Mecca. It wasn't safe for even the prophet to remain in mecca. ○ Abu Talib was no longer there to protect him as the chief of the Quraish. Mushrikeen thought Abu Talib was one of them so they would accepted him and let him protect the Prophet • Mushrikeen got together to figure out how to get rid of the prophet. They considered banishment, etc, but finally decided the only way to extinguish Islam was by killing the prophet • The prophet went to mecca to Ta'if to seek refuge, but the people of Ta'if refused to grant him safe haven • Prophet was not finding asylum himself anywhere • At this very bleak time the Allah revealed surah An'aam Most of the verses are related to one or more topic: 1. Strong refutation of Shirk 2. Elucidation of the doctrine of life after death. 3. Discussion about some of the prevalent superstitious beliefs of the pagans 4. (Foreshadowing) Fundamental Moral principles for building an ideal Islamic community and society. 5. Answers the mushrikeen about what they said against the prophet's character 6. Consoles the believers 7. Stern warnings and threads directed towards those standing in the way of the Prophet and Islam, which is trying to give life to the human being Verse 1: "All praise belongs to Allah who created the heavens and the earth and made the darkness and the light. Yet the faithless equate [others] with their Lord." First word: Alhamd What does it mean? In Arabic, three words have similar meanings with significant differences • Al hamd • Al Madh • Ash Shukr Allah is very precise about his wording in the Quran Hamd is actually a combination of Madh and Shukr, Praise and Gratitude. It's a sincere praise that's rooted in love and gratitude and reverence Why is Allah the only one worthy of all praise? Ayat says: He is the one who created the heavens and earth. "And he appointed darknesses and light" Some people think this is a reference to day and night. It's also possible that this light is not talking about physical light, but a metaphysical light and darkness. In the verse, darknesses is mentioned in its plural form (zulumaat). But noor (light) is mentioned in the singular form.
