About Dornier Do-228 The Dornier 228 is a twin-turboprop STOL(Short Take Off & Landing) utility aircraft capable of transporting up to 19 passengers or various cargoes. The aircraft was originally designed by German company Dornier GmbH. In 1983, Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) bought a production license for the aircraft. The aircraft though designed in 1980s has undergone significant changes such asnew five-blade propeller made of composite material, more powerful engines and an advanced glass cockpit featuring electronic instrument displays and other avionics improvements. The Dornier 228 has been promoted in various capacities, including as a commuter aircraft, a military transporter, cargo hauler, or as a special mission’s aircraft. Special missions include maritime surveillance, border patrol, medevac, search and rescue, paradrop and environmental research missions. The aircraft can be used in various missions due due to its ten-hour flight endurance, a wide operating range, low operational cost, and varied equipment range. Special equipment available to be installed include a 360-degree surveillance radar, side-looking airborne radar, forward-looking infrared (FLIR) sensor, search light, operator station, real-time datalink, enlarged fuel tanks, satellite uplink, stretches, air-openable roller door, and infrared/ultraviolet sensors. Navy’s Dornier 228 aircraft equipped with State-of-the-art airborne Maritime Patrol Radar & sensors The Do-228 can also fulfil the requirement of a Light Transport Aircraft (LTA) within the defence forces. The aircraft has a maximum cruise speed of 428 kmph and a range of 700 kmph with day & night flying capability. Connecting North East India Dornier is considered to be an essential element of the UDAN (Ude Desh ka Aam Naagrik) scheme that the central government is attempting to put in place for regional connectivity. The Do- 228 is well-suited for operations in the North East and has the capabilities of short take-off and landing and take-off from semi-prepared runways. HAL has also signed lease agreement with Alliance Air for supply of two Civil Do-228s for regional operations in Arunachal Pradesh. It is the best aircraft for not just Arunachal Pradesh but for entire Northeast and can even bring Tripura's Kamalpur & Kailashar in the aviation map once again. Hindustan-228 aircraft is a variant of HAL manufactured Do-228 aircraft which is already deployed under the UDAN scheme. Hindustan-228 aircraft is being certified to the latest international airworthiness standards with modern avionics system and will be suitable for operations under UDAN scheme. Currently, HAL has entered into an agreement with M/s Alliance Air on 26th September 2021 for dry leasing of its two Do-228 aircrafts for deployment in the North Eastern Region. The project is funded by HAL for the prototype manufacturing and type Certification from DGCA. Additional fund has also been sanctioned by HAL for the manufacture of six more aircraft. Do-228 operated by Armed Forces Indian Navy is operating 25 Dornier and 12 are in order. Indian coast guard is operating 36 Dornier for reconnaissance. The state-of-the-art multi-role Short Range Maritime Reconnaissance aircraft will keep an eye in ocean. These upgraded aircrafts are equipped with glass cockpit, advanced surveillance radar, ELINT (Electronic Intelligence) sensors and networking features used for electronic warfare mission, maritime surveillance, search and rescue and providing targeting data to weapon platforms.
