This is the 6th episode in a new series following the construction of a small, but very stylish, vacation home for one of our clients. We are calling it The Modern Mountain Getaway, and it features vaulted ceilings, a huge wall of windows, and lots of outdoor space for the owners zen garden! In this series, we will highlight building techniques, building codes, order of operations, cost, building materials and tools used, and also even talk about the problems we run into during the build! In Episode 6 we FINALLY get to start framing... this is the fun part for me. I love seeing one of our designs come to life day by day as we build. We will be building the first floor walls, and as always sharing some techniques that have saved us time and also some technical info on the structure of these walls. We also build the BIG window wall on the high side of the single pitch roof, and this is one that has been on my mind for a while due to its size and weight. We figured the stud length on this front wall based on the length of the studs in the lower wall... We then added 3 inches per foot of run (3/12 pitch roof) across the structure to get a final number on the total wall height difference. Jaime is finally on the job and talks about how he is progressing with his injury. He is pretty amazing. And as always, we include footage of the Perkins crew enjoying life here in the Great Smoky Mountains of North Carolina.
