We continue our Estonian video series with Tallinn's historic Old Town. Watch part one here:    • Tallinn Old Town walk | April 2023 | ...   Tallinn's Old Town is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It is considered one of the best-preserved medieval cities in Europe. - - - - - - - We start by walking through the beautiful Toompark - a popular urban park situated on a hillside adjacent to the Old Town. It offers a serene and green oasis amidst the bustling cityscape. The park covers an area of approximately 9 hectares. It provides locals and visitors with a place to relax, stroll, and enjoy nature. We then turn up the hill towards Long Hermann (Pikk Hermann), an iconic tower on Toompea Hill in Tallinn, Estonia. It is an integral part of Toompea Castle, which is the seat of the Estonian Parliament (Riigikogu). The tower has a long history dating back to the 14th century, making it one of the oldest surviving structures in Tallinn. Originally built as a defensive tower, it was part of the medieval fortifications surrounding the Toompea area. Today, the tower is primarily associated with the Estonian Parliament and the country's government. It stands as a symbol of Estonia's sovereignty and democratic governance. The flag on top of the Tall Hermann Tower is an important national symbol, and it is raised and lowered daily with a ceremonial ritual. After reaching the top of the hill, we turn left at Kiek in de Kök (which translates to "Peek into the Kitchen" in Low German) - a medieval 38 meters (125 feet) tall defensive tower. It is one of the most well-known and distinctive towers in the city and holds historical significance as part of Tallinn's fortifications. The tower was constructed in the 15th century and served as a defensive structure along the city walls. Its primary purpose was to provide strategic surveillance and protection for the city against potential attackers. The name "Kiek in de Kök" originates from the tower's height, which allowed the guards to "peek" into the nearby kitchens of the houses below. Today, Kiek in de Kök is a museum and a popular tourist attraction in Tallinn. The museum allows visitors to explore the tower's interior and learn about its historical significance. Adjacent to Kiek in de Kök is the Maiden's Tower (Neitsitorn), also part of the museum complex. The Maiden's Tower offers a glimpse into the underground tunnels and passages that connected different parts of Tallinn's fortifications. We then turn right and walk to the Patkuli Viewing Platform - a popular scenic viewpoint. It offers breathtaking panoramic views of the city's Old Town, Toompea Hill, and the lower town. The platform itself is designed to blend harmoniously with the surrounding environment. It features a wooden terrace with balustrades, allowing visitors to safely enjoy the view while taking memorable photographs. The spot is particularly enchanting during sunrise, sunset, and twilight hours when the cityscape is bathed in golden hues. We turn back and walk down to the lower town along the historic Pikk Jalg Street (Long Leg Street in English). It is one of the city's oldest and most picturesque streets, known for its charming medieval atmosphere and architectural beauty. The street's name is derived from its elongated shape, resembling a long leg reaching from the hill to the lower part of the city. Our little walk ends right back where we started, at the foot of Toompea Hill.
