Azerbaijan Horse \ Karabakh Horse Country of Origin: Azerbaijan The Azerbaijan is a saddle horse that comes from regions of Azerbaijan, as well as parts of Georgia & Armenia. This breed has long been native to the area & are well adapted to herd life. Developed as a saddle-pack animal, this breed was also favored as a war horse due to their robust character. The Azerbaijan stock has been enhanced with both Arabian & Tersk blood. This breed is known for an unstable temperament (due to largely wild herding instincts) & their natural pacing gait. These original native animals have given rise to several types of horses bred in the Azerbaijan region – they are generally named for their specific place of breeding. These types are: Karabakh horse, Cuban pacers, Shirvan horse & the Deliboz. Average height 13.1 – 14 hands. Healthy with a long life span. Height (size) 13.2 – 14.0 hands high Azerbaijan is highly valued in its homeland and is regarded as a national treasure. It appears on stamps, in literature, and even on the coat of arms of Karabakh Aghdam FK, an Azerbaijani football team. It is noted for its ability to attain high speeds very quickly. Originally bred for use as a pack animal, the sturdy build of this breed made it a popular choice for military purposes. The Azerbaijan stock has been improved by the addition of Arabian as well as Tersk blood. They are well suited for hot and mountainous regions, and have a lot of stamina and strength. Players riding Karabakh horses play Chovgan, an early form of polo, in Baku ahead of the European Games in the Azerbaijani capital. Cross-breeding and the Armenian-Azerbaijani war has seen numbers of the Karabakh decrease significantly. Azerbaijan's Ministry of Agriculture has drawn up a number of horse breeding programs and taken steps to improve veterinary services to try and protect the breed and increase numbers. The mountain-steppe racing horse is named after the geographical region where it was originally bred. The Karabakh horse is the result of cross-breeding and stands out with what's been described as its 'golden glow.' A German company is assisting the Azerbaijani government with gene research by establishing the horses genetic profiling and setting up a system of identification to track the breed.
