Enjoy the sun, but be careful not to get burned. Protecting children from the sun is the most important way to prevent skin cancer later in life. That's why we are launching a large campaign. We are distributing over 700 bottles of sunscreen to all primary schools, and the schools can use a special educational package called 'Smart with the Sun'. Just like washing your hands before eating, you apply sunscreen when the sun is shining. That's what we want to teach children. It's about raising awareness and protecting oneself.” What are Karen van Poppelen's three most important tips? "Protect your skin by applying, covering and seeking shade. Apply sunscreen every 2 hours. When it comes to covering, wear a hat, sunglasses, and protective clothing. And seeking shade: try to spend more time in the shade, especially between 12:00 and 15:00." Preventing unnecessary suffering Karen van Poppelen is enthusiastic. She doesn't want to wait until patients are in her office to deliver the message. "We can tackle skin cancer earlier! I see patients suffering needlessly, and it's preventable. That's what I want to advocate for. Last year, we started distributing free sunscreen at the entrances and exits of our hospital, and it was very well received. Now we're taking it to a larger scale. We are focusing on children because it's important to learn at a young age. The Dutch Cancer Society (KWF) has a great educational package for primary schools. And by distributing sunscreen, we truly hope to start a movement. Let's go into the summer well-protected together!" Increase in skin cancer cases Skin cancer is the most common type of cancer in the Netherlands, and the number of people diagnosed with it increases every year. Over the past 10 years, the number of people with skin cancer has more than doubled. In 2021, over 80,000 Dutch people were diagnosed with skin cancer, and hundreds of people die from the disease each year. Most often, skin cancer is caused by excessive exposure to UV radiation or tanning beds. Collaboration This campaign is an initiative of VieCuri Medical Center in collaboration with health insurer VGZ and the municipalities of North Limburg.
