With the naming ceremony held last month, KALLIO has officially been renamed Antarctic Enabler. With its new name, the vessel has stepped into a new era and an enhanced mission. This conversion project, carried out to support Aker Qrill Company’s sustainable krill operations, serves as a clear example of how impressive results can be achieved even within limited timeframes through strong collaboration between Aker Qrill Company, NSK Design, and Norse Shipyard. The design process was undertaken by NSK Design, and the conversion works were successfully completed by Norse Shipyard in just 3.5 months. Thanks to real‑time and transparent communication, coupled with a shared solution‑oriented approach, all emerging technical requirements were promptly resolved; the project progressed both efficiently and seamlessly. This project once again demonstrates that successful shipbuilding relies not only on technical expertise, but also on the right partnerships, mutual trust, and strong collaboration. This comprehensive transformation enabled Antarctic Enabler to fully adapt to its new role. In line with the vision of supporting sustainable solutions in krill harvesting, the former bulk carrier has been converted into a Krill Support Vessel, providing logistical and technical support for krill operations in Antarctica. Key Upgrades Implemented on the Vessel • Increased fuel storage capacity • A drone hangar and control station for multiple search drones supporting the fishing fleet • Expanded and modernized accommodation areas • Renewed waste management systems • Safety and operational systems upgraded in compliance with Polar Code standards Antarctic Enabler now offers a safe, comfortable, and highly functional environment for both crew and operational teams, and is capable of carrying out long‑duration missions under the challenging conditions of Antarctica. We extend our sincere appreciation to the valued teams of Aker QRILL Company, NSK Ship Design, and Norse Shipyard, as well as all stakeholders who contributed to the success of this project.
