A fine individual of Paramecium caudatum inhabited the sample, and spent lots of time being conveniently parked. It is also quite big -- this clip is through a 20x obj rather than the 40x I usually use. You can watch the food vacuoles filling up and pinching off the cytostome ('mouth') and gradually making their way around the digestive pathway, with waste vacuoles expelled through the cytoproct('anus') behind the mouth. The two contractile vacuoles can also be seen filling up and expelling their contents along the side (opposite of the mouth). This is a pretty long clip -- don't have time to edit so this is raw footage, unmodified from what was recorded earlier today, in fact. Hope this provides a glimpse into the life of a large ciliate.
