Diverting water to a swale

One of my swales wasn't catching any water, despite good rains. An analysis of the land showed that all the water was sheeting off to the one side and was consequently lost. The answer was a pickaxe and some time. I dug a ditch and diverted the water from the areas, where it wasn't being caught into the nearest swale, which is planted with some indigenous nitrogen-fixing trees. Within a few hours the swale started to fill up and by the next morning there was a significant amount of water being infiltrated into the landscape.
