Landon Ronald was a composer as well as a conductor and pianist. Everyone seems to be agreed that his best song is 'O Lovely Night!' Here is the version recorded by Australian soprano Nellie Melba (1861-1931) for Victor at Camden, New Jersey, on 26 August 1910. Victor was always in no doubt that its recordings were superior to those made by The Gramophone Company. For this reason, it remade many of Melba's English recordings. The Gramophone Company was equally certain that its recordings were better. In 1910, Sydney Dixon, the manager of the British Branch, set out his conclusions about the products of the two companies. He was of the view that Victor's process had a 'tightening-up effect' on the voice which altered the tone and made the voice sound 'slightly harder.' As regards accompaniment, he judged the Victor products to be 'all voice and an orchestra somewhere in the distance,' opining that 'the tone of our orchestra when used in accompaniment is superior.' All of this can be heard in Melba's Victors of the period. Another problem with this side results from something that is normally a virtue. I made this transfer from a very clean 1930s Australian laminated pressing of HMV DB 350. The only problem with Australian pressings is that Hayes apparently refused to send to Australia more than one set of metal parts for each recording. As a result, pressings progressively deteriorated in quality as the years passed. Despite all of this, it's the best copy of this recording I've yet managed to find, so ignore the faults as much as possible and enjoy!
