In response to escalating tensions near the strategically vital Strait of Hormuz, the United States is deploying the USS Tripoli Amphibious Ready Group (ARG) and approximately 2,500 Marines from the 31st Marine Expeditionary Unit to West Asia. Currently stationed in Japan under the 7th Fleet, this strike group which includes the guided-missile cruiser USS Robert Smalls and the destroyer USS Rafael Peralta is expected to join the 50,000 U.S. troops already in the region within two weeks.
