As one of four surviving patients in the Compassionate Investigational New Drug program, Musikka receives medicinal cannabis from the federal government each year to treat her glaucoma. She was the first woman to be accepted into the program in 1988, and she continues to advocate for more inclusive cannabis legislation. The Columbian native came to America with her family in the 1950’s. Musikka was born with congenital cataracts, so, as a child, she underwent several eye surgeries which ultimately led to her glaucoma diagnosis. Her doctor recommended cannabis, which proved to be an effective resolution in treating her condition. However, she was later arrested for the cultivation of marijuana, and was forced to go to trial. Alongside a team of legal and health professionals, Musikka won her case and was granted access into the National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA) program.
