MT. CB 13 Expedition: Conquering the Cold Desert Peaks of Lahaul | Climbing CB13. Welcome to the MT. CB 13 Expedition – an exhilarating journey to conquer one of the most challenging and remote peaks in the Chandrabhaga Range of Himachal Pradesh, India. Nestled in the heart of the cold desert region of Lahaul, the mountain—CB13 (6,264m) is as unforgiving as beautiful, offering a rare opportunity to test the limits of any mountaineer. The Chandrabhaga Range is known for its rugged terrain, with towering peaks that have only been partially explored, and some still remain untouched. CB13, with its iconic height and technical challenges, stands as a star in this mountain range, named after the two main rivers of Lahaul – Chandra and Bhaga. While some climbers have dared to summit these peaks, others still find themselves drawn to the unyielding slopes that make this region one of the most thrilling places for high-altitude expeditions. Why CB13 ? CB 13 are known not only for its height but for their shifting and harsh landscapes. As the glaciers recede, more exposed rock is revealed, making each year’s climb more challenging than the last. The terrain is filled with steep boulder fields, requiring expert navigation and rock climbing skills. For CB13, the final 150 meters to the summit demand intense rock climbing abilities as you scale near-vertical walls that rise to chest height. Thanks to the opening of the Atal Tunnel, access to this beautiful but remote region has improved, making it easier for adventurers to experience the raw beauty of the Kunzum Range and the Chandratal lake from the summits of these iconic peaks. From sweeping views of the Chandra River to panoramic vistas of the rugged terrain, these climbs provide not just a physical challenge, but a spiritual one too. The Climbing Experience: Climbing CB13 is not for the faint-hearted. These peaks require expert-level skills, as well as a deep understanding of high-altitude challenges. The uneven landscape and sheer rock faces demand both patience and precision. The climbs are physically demanding, especially with the dual nature of the expedition—tackling two peaks in one journey will test your energy management, stamina, and mental fortitude. As experienced climbers, you’ll need to strategize for both the technical rock climbing sections and the high-altitude conditions, which require acclimatization and an awareness of the changing environment. These peaks are reserved for seasoned climbers with previous Himalayan and high-altitude experience. Why Watch This Expedition Video? Whether you're an experienced mountaineer or an armchair adventurer, this expedition will inspire you to push your limits. ----- A stories behind that crash----- The AN-12 aircraft of the IAF which took off from Chandigarh on February 7, 1968, on a routine logistics sortie with 102 people on board to Leh in Jammu and Kashmir when it crashed into the Chandrabhaga peak in inclement weather. It was only in July 2003 that an expedition from the Atal Bihari Vajpayee Institute of Mountaineering and Allied Sports in Manali discovered the wreckage site. The team also found the mortal remains and documents of one Beli Ram. His remains were moved to his native village in Akhnoor and cremated with full military honours. Subsequently, the Indian Army launched expeditions every summer to recover bodies of the lost soldiers. Code named Opertion Punaruthan-III, an expedition of the army retrieved three bodies on Aug 9, 2007, near the Chandrabhaga peak. The Black Box of the aircraft has not been recovered so far and the cause of the crash is shrouded in mystery. Thakur said chances of recovery of major portion of the aircraft have increased as it was likely that it was buried into the glacier which was now melting every year. “It appears that thick snow cover over the glacier is thinning which would facilitate spotting of major portion of the aircraft,” he added. Manali sub-divisional magistrate Balbir Thakur handed over the objects collected from the site to Col Arun Kainthala, Administrative Commandant posted at army transit camp at Palchan, some nine km from Manali.
