If you have done an internet search of the word "landrace," you've probably noticed that this term is statistically most popular with the cannabis world. If you are coming from the angle of Joesph Lofthouse-style modern landrace breeding, then you know a landrace to be a population of localized genetics that you are trying to build in your garden, typically by growing lots of named varieties together to first get a grex (a noisy, initial mix of lots of genetics) and then selecting towards your landrace from that grex. In the cannabis world, landraces tend to refer to populations that are found growing in specific (sometimes exotic and remote) locales with a long history of outdoor cultivation, and are associated with a terroir that can only best be expressed when grown in their native habitats. The terms are used to denote essentially the same thing: a localized population that has been shaped by natural selection as well as grower selection and seed-saving. But it is interesting to note that in landrace gardening a landrace is the end goal, whereas most of the talk about landraces in the cannabis scene seems to deal with using old landraces as sources of genetics for line breeding, fixing genetic bottlenecks and reversing the effects of inbreeding.
