Dr. Julie M Keller, Partner at Restoration Orthopaedics and Chief of Orthopaedic Trauma at Hackensack University Medical Center: While riding his motorcycle, Charlie sustained a significant injury to his left leg. His tibia was fractured into many pieces, and there was significant damage to the surrounding soft tissue including a nerve injury which needed to be grafted. Charlie's fracture was "open" and he had significant bone loss making it impossible to fix primarily with a plate and screws. He was left with two options - amputation or limb salvage. Dr. Julie Keller, Partner at Restoration Orthopedics and Chief of Orthopedic Trauma at Hackensack Medical Center, was on call when Charlie came into the hospital. She initially washed out the wound and "temporized" the leg and fracture. After numerous subsequent conversations, they moved forward with a special limb salvage procedure called a "bone transport". Using an external fixator frame, Dr. Keller was able to recreate the fracture and grow new bone, sequentially lengthening the leg to make up for the bone loss.
