We're surprised before NAMM with Korg KRONOS 2025, an updated version of the acclaimed workstation , which promises more speed and new sounds, while maintaining its essence of success. The question remains, however, whether the new features will be enough to keep the company's throne in an increasingly competitive market. Subtle evolution, renewed power The new Korg KRONOS 2025 arrives with a redesigned system architecture that the company claims results in a 60 percent faster boot-up time. The central touchscreen interface has also been revamped, and promises to be faster, more responsive, and more intuitive to use. These improvements aim to optimize the operating method of musicians and keyboard players, allowing them to immerse themselves in musical creation with fewer technical obstacles. Under the hood, however, the overall design is strikingly similar to its predecessors. The heart of the Korg KRONOS still lies within its nine independent sound generators, each of which operates as stand-alone synthesizers. And this setup, which includes piano, organ, and electric piano emulations, along with virtual analog synths based on Korg classics, PCM sampling synthesis, FM, and physical modeling, maintains the versatility that made the original Korg KRONOS famous. New sounds in Korg KRONOS 2025 – same soul The new Korg KRONOS expands its already impressive sound library with 256 additional programs. New additions include a new Italian grand piano, a vintage electric piano with tine , and an expanded range of FM synthesis-based piano sounds. This expansion adds to backward compatibility, and provides access to over 300 existing complete libraries. Expandability remains a strong point of Korg’s massive keyboard, with a 62GB SSD allowing for user sampling and sound library expansion. In addition, the Korg KRONOS 2025 brings into play 16 audio tracks and 16 MIDI tracks for sequencing and recording, as well as extensive Set List capabilities . This combination of new sounds and familiar functionality is intended to satisfy both loyal users and new converts. Revolution or evolution? Despite the improvements, the new Korg KRONOS feels more like an evolution than a revolution . The operating system, listed as Kronos System Version 3.2 , suggests that this is a minor update from the 3.1.3 version seen on discontinued models. This decision by Korg raises some questions about how it will compare to modern rivals such as the Arturia AstroLab (somewhat distant in our opinion, and with only one keyboard extension, 61 notes). The hardware maintains the familiar aesthetic, though, with a stunning powder-coated metal body and black wooden side panels. It will be available in 61-, 73- and 88-key versions, the first two featuring a semi-weighted Natural Touch keyboard and the larger featuring RH3 hammer-action keys, seemingly identical to previous versions. We applaud the arrival of Korg KRONOS 2025 We're excited to see that the return of the Korg KRONOS 2025 represents a serious attempt by the company to keep a legend alive in the realm of high-end workstation musical keyboards . And while the speed improvements and addition of new sounds are welcome, it remains to be seen whether they will be enough to compete in a market that has evolved significantly since the model's original debut in 2011 . For musicians who appreciated the versatility and sound quality of the original KRONOS , this revamped version could be a very tempting upgrade. And for those looking for a revolution in the concept of a workstation , the new Korg KRONOS might seem more like a nostalgic throwback than a leap into the future. ----------------------------------------- Produced from Future Music media[LAB] en Madrid, España All demos, KORG Press
