***WARNING FOR VIOLENCE*** Dakini is a sort of malevolent spirit in Buddhism, who is part of Kali's retinue and eats human flesh, and is associated with a fox. (This is basically what the author's note on niconico said.) Don't watch if you are sensitive to that kind of stuff/ are too young. **About the mantra at the beginning and the middle - I did quite a bit of research at was able to determine that this is the traditionally chant of Dakini in Shingon Buddhism (Japanese esoteric Buddhism). As for the meaning, I found out that the words here are a corruption of Sanskrit words - for example, "on" in the song is the traditionally "om" sound that associates with meditation; om is said to contain the universe, as it encompasses all sounds, from the back of the throat to the lips. However, the Sanskrit is corrupted here and is not ordinary Sanskrit: "In the Vajrayana [Esoteric Buddhism]tradition, now preserved mainly in Tibetan lineages, it has long been recognized that certain important teachings are expressed in a form of secret symbolic language known as saṃdhyā-bhāṣā, 'Twilight Language'." (Bucknell, Roderick & Stuart-Fox, Martin (1986). The Twilight Language: Explorations in Buddhist Meditation and Symbolism) *This marks lines were I am the least sure about the translation. This song was very hard to translate - it had many vague or confusing lyrics, so sometimes I wasn't exactly sure about the meaning. I did my best to make it accurate! Translation Notes (here we go): 0:35 - In this sentence, the silence could instead be tearing up someone flying through the night, instead of the other way around. The way I translated it in the song seemed more probable. 0:41 - "Death agonies" is not actually connected to "the flesh and blood of the living." The Japanese is just sort of like "flesh and blood of living death moans. " So perhaps that's wrong, but it seemed most probable. 0:58 So /kokuu/ (void) is just a character away from the word /kokuuzou/, meaning "Akasagarbha, the Receptacle of Void," a Buddhist term. 1:04 The word "bosom" could mean "pocket;" in fact, it usually means that, but I thought that dakini was probably not just a violent pickpocket. Also, the pocket/bosom could be the thing ripping something else. 1:15 - So I was pretty lost with this line - at least the way it I have it makes sense. Literally, this means, "Your stomach, conversely (or in exchange for) ... if that's the case, does not give!" So... yeah, sorry, I'm not sure if my translation's right - but it seemed the best way to make sense out of the lyrics. 1:43 - "I'll eat up your life.." the use of a certain Japanese word makes this line mean, "I'll eat up your life, but it's not limited to that" - she will eat things having to do with your life also. 1:43 - The word I translated as "hell" usually means "pandemonium" or "agonizing cries" - however the word contains in it the word for the Avici hell of buddhism, the worst hell, and can mean "two of Buddhism's hells, " according to my dictionary. (There are many, many hells in Buddhism. Look up Naraka (Buddhism) on Wikipedia. ) 1:57 - So it is possible that the sound of Dakini eating people drowns out the sound of the prayers. But there are many more people than the one dakini, so I thought this would be the most probable. 2:11 - So there is a word here, /okishi/, which I could not find anywhere on the internet except for in a poem written in the 1000s AD by Fujiwara no Mototoshi, in which the phrase "chigiri okishi" was translated "greatly promised." So I used "solemn promise" here. 2:49 This was the other line where I was like "Wha..." Literally, this is "Eternity wandering everything is not returned simply to nothingness" or "eternity wandering absolutely not returned simply to nothingness."
