During the spring of 2017, Portland Free Play worked with Vernon Elementary School (Portland, OR) to see what happens when 'Loose Parts' are added to the playground during recess. ‘Loose parts’ are scrap materials that kids can use, change, and manipulate in play activities. They are open-ended, meaning that they have no pre-determined use and are adaptable to whatever the child wishes to play! The parts were all stored in a big container on the playground called a Play Pod, and were brought out every day for recess time. Here is what happened!
