It is not a routine investigation to be done in all women to find out the cause for infertility. It is recommended by the world health organization that it doesn’t fall into a routine investigation. But there are certain indications where the laparoscopy is indicated. We suggest a woman to undergo a diagnostic laparoscopy when there is other co-existing pathology which can interfere with the normal conception like on scan we found out there is an endometriosis or a hydrosaphinx or we do suspect that there is some adhesions distorting the pelvic anatomy. Also in women who has polycystic ovary. In polycystic ovary we also do an ovarian drilling along with the diagnostic laparoscopy or in any woman who has hydrosalpinx, we may have to do hydrosalpinx clipping. Also in women where we have not established tubal patency, with less invasive testing like hysterosalpingography, or sonohysterogram, in them we can do laparoscopy as it is a gold standard to do tubal patency along with lapraoscopy. Generally along with laparoscopy, we also do hysteroscopy. We have found that almost 25% of women, when we do hysteroscopy. We have to find that there is certain amount of intrauterine problems that interfere with normal conception of the women, like polyps or intrauterine adhesions. When we are doing a laparoscopy, we combine it with hysteroscopy which is known as hysterolapraoscopy. But you have to discuss to discuss with your infertility specialist about the options and the pros and cons of doing a hysterolaparoscopy as this turns out to be an invasive testing but hysterolaparoscopy happens to be a day care surgery. Can be done in any good fertility set up with a good surgical hands.
