Mayo Clinic cardiac surgeon Joseph Dearani, M.D., discusses the management of the anomalous origin of the coronary artery in children and young adults. Visit http://www.mayoclinic.org/diseases-co... for more information on congenital heart disease or to request an appointment. Congenital anomalies of the coronary arteries are very uncommon. Symptoms can include chest pain and myocardial ischemia and could result in sudden cardiac death. Congenital anomalies of the coronary arteries can be identified though CT scanning and treatment includes surgical intervention. Indications for surgical intervention for congenital anomalies of the coronary arteries include chest pain, ischemia, and restricted physical activity. A minimally invasive corrective procedure called unroofing is used to treat this anomaly, and it is uncommon for subsequent interventions to be required. Patients with congenital anomalies of the coronary arteries are typically able to resume full activity with clearance from their cardiologist.
