NATIONAL MONUMENTS BY COUNTY – LIMERICK Limerick, a county of tales and legends, is one of the richest archaeological landscapes in the country. Over 10,000 archaeological monuments have been recorded in the county dating back over some ten thousand years to the time of our hunter and gatherer Stone Age ancestors. The State maintains a selection of monuments throughout the county that are accessible to the public to enjoy and explore. Lough Gur has long been a place of interest to those fascinated by archaeology. Grange Stone Circle, Lough Gur, is one of the wonders of ancient Ireland and people still gather here to celebrate the mid-summer solstice. The great wedge tomb at Lough Gur is another reminder of our pre-historic past. The round tower at Dysert-Anguesha is a symbol of early medieval Christianity, one of the richest periods in the county’s history. The Franciscans and the Dominican orders were introduced in the 13th century and their great houses at Adare, Askeaton and Kilmallock are amongst the finest monastic complexes in the country. The Earls of Desmond dominated Limerick and Munster in the later medieval period and their power and influence is reflected by their castles at Newcastlewast and Askeaton. The Earls of Kildare also held territory in Limerick on which they built the castle at Adare on the banks of the River Maigue. There are almost 1,000 monuments in State Care across the country, managed and cared for by OPW - Office of Public Works. As we slowly get back on our feet, we remember that these monuments have stood resilient for hundreds if not thousands of years and they will be there for you to all visit as we emerge from this challenging time.
