Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini (1902–1989) was a Shiʿa Islamic cleric and revolutionary leader who led the 1979 Iranian Revolution, overthrowing the Pahlavi monarchy and founding the Islamic Republic of Iran. A critic of Western influence and authoritarian rule under the Shah, he spent years in exile before returning to Iran in 1979 to massive popular support. Khomeini introduced the doctrine of Velayat-e Faqih (Guardianship of the Islamic Jurist), which placed ultimate political authority in the hands of a senior cleric. As Iran’s first Supreme Leader, he reshaped the country into a theocratic state, influencing its politics, society, and foreign policy until his death.
