Chicago Tribune Co. | 675 N.E.2d 249 (1996) Zealous reporters inserted themselves into a grieving mother’s private moments and must answer for their behavior in a civil suit in Green versus Chicago Tribune Company. Calvin Green was shot and died hours later at a hospital. Without the permission of Calvin’s mother, Laura, staff of the Chicago Tribune went into Calvin’s room and photographed him as he was dying. During this time, the Tribune didn’t let Laura into the room. The Tribune also photographed Calvin, without permission, after his death. Laura declined to make a statement, but the Tribune eavesdropped while Laura spoke to Calvin, telling Calvin that she loved him, discussed God, and commented on the troubled world. Then, the Tribune ran a front-page story about gang violence. It featured one of the photos of Calvin’s dead body that the Tribune took at the hospital and quoted Laura’s statements to her son. Two days later, the Tribune ran another front-page story about gang violence. This time, it used a photo of doctors treating Calvin shortly before his death. Laura sued. The Tribune asked the court to dismiss Laura’s case, arguing that Laura’s amended complaint didn’t include the needed facts to support her claims.
